However, if you want to climb the peak under your own steam, you will find a surprisingly alpine and varied route on the south face.

The tour leads from the Engelberg valley via the Grassen bivouac route directly onto the Titlis massif. It combines mountain hiking, easy climbing and high alpine terrain to create one of the most exciting alternatives to the well-known panoramic mountain.

Route description

The ascent begins in the Engelberg valley and initially leads via hiking trails and alpine paths towards the Grassen bivouac. As altitude increases, the terrain becomes steeper and rockier.

The former via ferrata in the south face has largely been dismantled. The wire ropes have been removed, but numerous steel bars are still present and can be used for rope protection if required. The ladders at the steep crux sections are also still in good condition as of 2025.

Via steep crags, ladders and stepped rock terrain, you finally reach the upper part of the Titlis massif and climb directly to Klein Titlis.

Unlike the standard route, you avoid the major descent after the mountain journey and experience the Titlis from its wild and little-known side.

Tour details

Grade: ZS / III

Time required: approx. 7 hours

Season: July to September

Ascent: 2000m

Descent: 50 m

Start: 1084 m above sea level.

Summit elevation: 3,062 m above sea level.

Requirements

This tour is aimed at experienced mountaineers with a love of alpine terrain.

You should:

be completely sure-footed and have a head for heights

to be able to move safely in trackless terrain

be able to tackle simple via ferrata sections up to grade III

easily manage around 2,000 vertical metres of ascent

Bring experience of alpine terrain

Route finding and hazards

Route finding on the south face is challenging and requires attention. />

Tour characteristics

The Klein Titlis via the south face is not a classic high-alpine tour, but rather an alpine mountain tour with climbing sections, exposed passages and demanding route finding. It is precisely the combination of the direct valley ascent, the alpine terrain and the history-laden former via ferrata route that makes this tour so uniquely appealing.

Mole

Former via ferrata in the south face

In the years 1993 and 1994, a via ferrata was established through the Klein Titlis south face. Due to the heavy snow pressure and the immense wet snow avalanches in spring, the via ferrata was repeatedly destroyed. Consequently, it was decided no longer to maintain the via ferrata.

My tip

The south face is one of the most exciting ways to reach the Titlis under your own steam. Especially in late summer and early autumn, conditions are often ideal. Anyone wanting to experience the famous Titlis away from the tourist crowds will find a surprisingly lonely and alpine route here.

Conclusion

The south face of the Klein Titlis is a varied mountain tour for experienced alpinists. The combination of a direct ascent, easy climbing, an alpine atmosphere and the impressive scenery of the Titlis south face makes it one of the most interesting alternative routes on the Titlis.

Does the via ferrata on the Titlis south face still exist?

No. The wire ropes have mostly been removed.
