The freeride descents to Grünenwald and Schwand belong to the most charming variants on the Brunni. Instead of steep couloirs, you can expect long forest glades, open meadow slopes and varied terrain well below the tree line.
The runs are particularly attractive when there is fresh snow or poor visibility. The forest provides good contrast and makes navigation easy. The final metres lead to the former Grünewald valley station or to Schwand. From there, you can easily take a taxi or walk back to Engelberg.

Route description
The route starts at the Schonegg and initially follows the Bettelstock. Various options then lead across open slopes, forest clearings and glades towards Grünewald or Schwand.
In the lower part, the terrain flattens out and finally leads onto the forest track. The last 500 metres or so are on this track to the former Grünewald valley station or to Schwand.

Requirements
The route is suitable for advanced freeriders.
You should:
- be able to ski safely in deep snow
- Bring experience in open terrain
- have the complete avalanche transceiver rescue equipment with you
- to be able to assess the current avalanche situation
Hazards
In the forest, ditches, streams and fallen trees provide additional challenges. The final 500 metres or so lead via a forestry track to Grünewald. Depending on the snow conditions, a brief push may be needed there.

The variants according to Grünewald and Schwand are perfect alternatives in poor visibility or on days with a lot of fresh snow. As a local mountain guide, I know the best tree runs and often combine the descent with further runs on the Brunni.

Is the slip road to Grünewald difficult?
No. Technically it is less demanding than many Titlis descents. Navigating the forest and choosing the right line are what make it particularly appealing.
How do I get back to Engelberg?
From Grünewald or Schwand you can easily get a taxi back to Engelberg. Anyone who wants to can also continue on foot.
Are the final few metres still on snow?
Not always. The last roughly 500 metres run along the forestry road. Depending on the snow conditions, you may have to walk for a short section there.
Is there somewhere to stop for a bite to eat along the way?
Yes, the Schwand restaurant is a popular place to finish after the descent and is ideal for a late lunch or a coffee.
