Which MSL tour suits you best?
First multi-pitch routes
For a manageable introduction: Bettlerstock climbing training trail, Open path or that Stäuber learning climbing area.
Short climbing days
For compact trips with manageable ascents and descents: Schinberg, Schild-Schyegg or Mousetowers.
Long classics
Many pitch lengths and alpine endurance require, amongst other things, the Sättelistock SE Pillar, the Via-Ruedi or the Ina-Kante.
Alpine and self-reliant
For experienced teams skilled in alpine route finding and protection: Monster scale, Northern ramp or In Memoriam.
Difficult rock
You can find steeper and more technically demanding lines at the Wissberg South-East, am Titlis or in the Schlossberg West Face.
Ridge and traverse
For airy lines and long alpine days: Knife, Laucheren–Rigidalstock or Sunnigberggrat.
Climbing difficulty grades
Easy climbing. Intermediate protection is useful in exposed places.
Prior climbing experience and safe movement on rock are required.
More climbing technique, strength and experience with longer climbing sections.
Good climbing technique and secure movement on steep rock are required.
For well-trained and highly experienced climbers.
Extremely high demands in terms of technique, strength and endurance.
The climbing grade alone says little about the character of an alpine route. Read the information on protection, approach and descent as well as retreat options and check the weather and conditions before every tour.

What is a multi-pitch climb?
A multi-pitch climb consists of several climbing pitches. After each pitch, belaying takes place at a belay station before the next pitch begins. At the end, depending on the route, there follows a descent, abseiling or a traverse.
Which route is suitable for a first multi-pitch climb?
The Bettlerstock climbing practice path and Äbnet Wäg are manageable introductions. The Stäuber climbing practice area is also suitable for practising rope handling and belay station procedures. Dry rock, a suitable route and a good introduction are crucial.
Do I have to lead climb?
On a guided tour, that will be discussed beforehand. You don't have to lead every pitch. However, you should be able to comfortably and safely manage the chosen grade with something in reserve.
What equipment do I need?
Essentially, this includes a climbing harness, helmet, belay device, screw-lock carabiners, slings, a Prusik and climbing shoes. Depending on the route, you may also need a rope, quickdraws, portable anchors, approach shoes, crampons or other mountaineering equipment. The exact list can be found in the relevant route description.
Is the climbing grade sufficient for choosing the tour?
No. The grade describes the technical climbing section. Approach, wall height, protection, rock quality, orientation, retreat and the length of the tour can be just as crucial.
When is the best time for multi-pitch climbing in Engelberg?
Depending on the rock face, altitude and snow conditions, the season usually lasts from May to October. South-facing walls may dry out earlier, while high-alpine routes on the Titlis often take longer. The risks of thunderstorms, wetness and snow must be reassessed prior to every trip.
What does UIAA mean in climbing?
The UIAA scale describes the climbing grade in Roman numerals with additional symbols. It is not directly the same as the French scale. In the route description you will find the respective grading used and – where applicable – the compulsory difficulty.
When is a mountain guide useful?
A mountain guide is particularly helpful if you lack experience with multi-pitch routes, belay stations, alpine route finding, removable protection or retreat options. A guided tour can also be the ideal solution for a specific personal goal.
What happens in bad weather?
The tour only takes place in suitable weather and mountain conditions. If a route is wet, snowy or not advisable due to thunderstorms, a suitable alternative or a new date will be discussed.
