Grassen · Titlis back side · Autumn 2026

Never seen anything like it.

An exciting situation at Grassen. Where only a few years ago there was almost continuous ice, today rock steps and larger cracks are emerging.

Images of Firnalpelifirn, Firnalpeligletscher and Wendengletscher on the Titlis back side at Engelberg. Also included is a map and access stop for the Grassenbiwak.

Towards Grassen

Firnalpelifirn: Transition towards Grassen

View towards Grassen Campground and Grassen: The Firnalpelifirn does indeed have some crevasses. About three years ago, the glacier was almost continuously flowing towards Grassen here.

During the winter ascent to Grassen, the glacier has practically disappeared in the pass. Larger crevasses are clearly visible, and the rock emerges between them. The pass becomes more challenging – even now in summer and autumn.

Among the winter tracks

Firnalpeligletscher and Titlis cable car ride

The Firnalpeligletscher is still heavily glaciated and has many open crevasses. View from above, from the summer trail on the moraine. In winter, after starting at the «Schissihang», one drives over it.

The further images show the Firnalpeligletscher at about 2200 m. There is good visibility of the Titlis cable car and the columns below. In winter, you don't necessarily see these under the snow.

Access and orientation

Access to the Grassenbiwak: Overview stop

Access to Grassen Bivouac ab Gold floor or Schlangen/Bödmen. Both variants combine at Firnalpeli. Further along the iron pins to Ober Stäfeli, via Gorisegg and the Moräne. Above is a cable marked on the topo near the bivouac.

The route continues via Firnalpelifirn towards Grassen. No information is available regarding the condition of the iron pins and the cable. More about the ascent at Trails in the Skyrun Series.

At the campsite

Wendengletscher at the Grassen campsite

Campsite with views of the Wendengletscher. On the left at the corner you can see how much rock and debris has slid down the glacier. It is not known when this happened. This is also the route leading to the Titlis round trip over.
