Ski touring Wissigstock 2887 m
Contents
The Wissigstock is one of the finest recreational ski tours above the Rugghubel hut. The striking peak offers fantastic views of the Engelbergerertal, the Spannort group and the Uri Alps. Thanks to the varied slopes and generally excellent snow quality, the tour is considered a classic around the Rugghubel hut.
Combining the tour with an overnight stay in the Rugghubel hut is particularly worthwhile. This allows you to tackle the tour at a relaxed pace and combine it with other ski tours in the region. In good conditions, the long descent via the Griessenfirn slopes ensures unforgettable powder snow experiences.

Route description
The classic approach starts on the Bannalp and leads via the Rot Grätli to the Rugghubelhütte SAC. After an overnight stay, you climb via the Griessenfirn slopes towards the Wissigstock.
The final metres to the summit are easy on foot and offer a fantastic panoramic view. The descent is via the wide western slopes back to the Rugghubel hut or – if conditions are good – further down to the Bannalp.
Highlights
- Perfect ski tour with overnight stay in the Rugghubel hut
- Magnificent powder snow slopes
- Fantastic view of Engelberg and Uri
- Ideally combinable with the Brunnirotstock or Urirotstock
- Few technical difficulties
Requirements
The tour is suitable for ski mountaineers with some initial alpine experience.
You should:
- be able to ski safely in deep snow
- Master hairpins
- have experience with avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe
- to have a good level of fitness for up to 1,300 metres of elevation gain
Hazards
The summit slopes reach around 35° in places and require safe avalanche conditions. Particularly after fresh snow or wind-blown snow, a careful assessment is necessary.
Out with a mountain guide
The Wissigstock is an ideal high-altitude ski tour for anyone wishing to experience a high-alpine atmosphere without major technical difficulties. As a mountain guide, I like to combine the tour with an overnight stay at the Rugghubelhütte or further peaks in the surrounding area.
Along the way, you will receive valuable tips on track setting, avalanche assessment and ski technique in deep snow.
FAQ
Is an overnight stay at the Rugghubelhütte worth it?
Yes. The Rugghubelhütte is the ideal starting point and enables the combination with several ski tours.
Can the tour be done as a day trip?
Yes. From the Bannalp, the Wissigstock is also possible as a day trip. However, with an overnight stay in a hut, the tour is much more relaxed.
