The Buochserhorn is one of the finest pre-Alpine peaks in Central Switzerland. Thanks to its sunny location, straightforward ascent and long valley descents, it is counted among the most popular leisure tours between Engelberg, Nidwalden and Lake Lucerne.
The summit offers a fantastic view of Lake Lucerne, Mount Pilatus and the Uri Alps. Particularly rewarding are the long descents to Beckenried or – with enough snow – all the way to Büren in the Engelberg valley.

Route description
The classic route starts with the Dallenwil–Niederrickenbach aerial cableway. The ascent leads via the Bälmigrat to the wide south-east ridge of the Buochserhorn. The terrain is straightforward and easy to navigate.
The descent is either towards Beckenried or – with sufficient snow – down the long forest clearings to Büren. Both options offer plenty of skiing enjoyment and impressive views of Lake Lucerne.

Requirements
The tour is suitable for beginners and experienced ski tourers.
You should:
- be able to ski safely in deep snow
- mastering the first hairpin bends
- have experience with avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe
- have a normal basic fitness level for around 600 metres of ascent
Hazards
The route is technically straightforward. However, on the descents through the forest, you must pay attention to snow conditions and your bearings. Following fresh snowfall, some steep slopes may be at risk of avalanches.

Is the summit ridge difficult?
No. The final ascent along the ridge is technically straightforward, but frequently heavily wind-swept. Depending on the wind, the snow surface can be hard or icy. Ski crampons or, in individual cases, even crampons can be helpful.
Can I still ski down to Beckenried when there is little snow?
Often yes. The slopes consist largely of meadows and therefore require surprisingly little snow. If there still isn't enough snow in the lower section, you can easily ski down to Niederrickenbach or walk the last few metres to Beckenried in trainers.

When are the best conditions?
Thanks to its relatively low altitude, the Buochserhorn is particularly attractive after heavy snowfall. The best conditions generally prevail between January and March. In spring, the south-facing slopes quickly soften.
Do I need crampons?
Not always. However, following wind or prolonged periods of fine weather, the summit ridge is often blown-free and hard. In such conditions, crampons significantly increase comfort and safety.

On sunny weekends and after fresh snow, the Buochserhorn is one of the most popular ski touring destinations in the region. However, due to the wide choice of routes, the ski tourers are usually well distributed.
