At Arvigrat, the hiking areas of Wirzweli and Kerns meet. The narrow border ridge rewards with a wide view over both cantons. The ascents and valley descents, however, differ significantly: open meadows, forest trails and rough terrain are equally present.

From the starting point to the destination

Route description

01

By train to Wirzweli

The train from Dallenwil shortens the climb. From Wirzweli, one of the described routes leads over the Dürrenboden to the Arvigrat. Choose the exact route using the map; the access routes from Gummenalp and Wiesenberg are also separate variants.

02

On the thin line

In the upper part, the slopes and passages become narrower. The highest point is located on a narrow ridge. Snow conditions and wind determine how far it is sensible to ski.

03

Set the departure page

Do not mix the return journey to Wirzweli with the descent into Kerns. On the Kerns side, steeper slopes and forest trails are part of the tour. Check the transition to the chosen descent already during the ascent.

The return is part of the tour

Descent and variants

With enough snow, the long descent to Kerns is worthwhile. It requires a continuous snow cover down to the deep meadows and an organized return route. The southern ridge variant via the Egg is more challenging and is assessed separately.

What matters

Key points and planning

The route is not just about choosing the right elevation meters. Narrow forest passages, a narrow ridge at the end, and the differences between the downhill sides require safe turns and good orientation.

Check the avalanche bulletin and weather forecast for the relevant elevations and aspects. Plan your timing around snow conditions, warming and lift operating hours. Existing tracks do not replace your own assessment.

Appropriate to the route and the conditions

Equipment and requirements

  • Touring skis with climbing skins and suitable ski crampons; confidence in operating your bindings.
  • An avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel for each person, plus practised companion-rescue skills.
  • An up-to-date offline map, navigation tools, first-aid kit, bivouac bag and adequate warm and weatherproof clothing.
  • Confident off-piste skiing, fitness and sufficient reserves for the entire route.

Frequently asked questions

Which variant is the right one?

It depends on the starting point, snow conditions and the destination. The map shows several options; the route from Wirzweli cannot be compared to the elevation meters of another mountain station.

How do I get back to Kerns after a trip?

Check the further journey from Kerns by public transport in advance. A downhill ride is only advisable if the snow conditions are suitable for the lower section as well.
