Guided Gross Spannort Climb

A little bit of Patagonia. Right across Engelberg.

Steep rock towers, an expansive glacier and a summit pyramid that already arouses curiosity from the valley: the Gross Spannort is one of the most striking mountains around Engelberg. Its standard route combines an overnight stay at the Spannort hut with glacier crossings and climbing up to the third grade of difficulty.

A varied high-altitude tour for experienced mountaineers – away from the mountain railways and right in the middle of the high-alpine landscape of the Uri Alps.

Route description

01

To the Spannorthütte

On the first day you ascend from Engelberg to the Spannorthütte SAC. The overnight stay breaks the long undertaking into two days and allows for an early start on summit day.

02

Schlossberglücke & Glatt Firn

From the hut, the climb leads steeply to the Schlossberglücke. Here, the view opens up into the glacier landscape – particularly impressive in the early morning light. Afterwards, the route continues across the Glatt Firn towards the Spannortjoch.

Snow, firn, bare ice and crevasse zones determine the choice of route. Conditions change over the course of the season and must be assessed on site.

03

Three ascents to the summit

From the Spannortjoch follows the rocky summit structure. Three risers with climbing sections up to grade III lead via stepped rock to the summit cross at 3,198 metres. At the top, the view extends to the Titlis, across the Spannort group and far into the Urner Alps.

04

Abseiling & back to the valley

The descent normally follows the same route. The rocky outcrops are negotiated with abseiling sections before heading back via the glacier and the Schlossberglücke to the Spannorthütte. This is followed by the descent from the hut.

Travelling with experience

What you should bring

Gross Spannort is a classic high-altitude tour for mountaineers with alpine experience. The combination of length, glacier and rock demands more than fitness alone.

  • Safe walking with crampons
  • Experience on glaciers and in high-alpine terrain
  • Climbing up to grade three difficulty
  • Surefootedness and a head for heights
  • Fitness for a long summit day and the subsequent descent to the hut
  • For a self-guided tour: secure rope, abseiling and rescue techniques

Hazards & Conditions

On the Glatt Firn, crevasses are part of the tour. They can be openly visible or hidden beneath snow. On the rock, loose stones, exposed sections and other rope teams demand attention. Rockfall and the risk of a fall remain an issue even on supposedly easy climbing sections.

An early start makes sense, but does not replace an assessment of weather, snow, ice and rock. Route, equipment and schedule must match the actual conditions.

Arriving before heading up

The Spannort Hut

The Spannorthütte SAC is situated at 1,956 metres above the Engelberg valley. It is the classic base for the Gross Spannort: an evening at the hut, tour planning and heading out into the mountains early in the morning.

Book your accommodation well in advance, especially at weekends. For a guided tour, we will clarify the meeting point, schedule and equipment in advance.

Questions about the Gross Spannort

How long does a guided tour take?

Normally it's 1½ days including an overnight stay in the Spannorthütte. The evening before, we meet for dinner, discuss the tour and prepare the equipment. The summit day starts early in the morning. The tour description states about seven hours for this; the exact schedule depends on the group and conditions.

After returning to the hut, the descent into the valley follows. You can find the details at the Guided ascent of Gross Spannort.

What is the Spannortseeli?

A small glacial lake can form in the area of the Spannortjoch. Its striking water makes it a special photo opportunity. Size and appearance change with snowmelt and water runoff. Depending on the time, the lake may also be completely absent.

Are there any crevasses on the route?

Yes. The standard route via the Schlossberglücke goes across the Glatt Firn. Crevasses can be visible or covered by snow. Glacier experience and appropriate safety and rescue techniques are therefore among the prerequisites for independent ascent.

Can you climb the Gross Spannort in a day?

Very fit and experienced mountaineers can undertake the tour directly from the valley. However, the additional ascent to the hut makes it a significantly longer undertaking. Staying overnight at the Spannorthütte splits the physical effort over two days and facilitates an early start on summit day.

Why is the mountain called Spannort?

The exact origin of the name is not definitively settled. A specific explanation therefore cannot be reliably given here.

Is the Gross Spannort a beginner tour?

The tour requires alpine experience, good physical condition, a sure foot and climbing up to grade III. For a first introduction to glacier and rope technique, a Mountaineering foundation course. On a guided Spannort tour, we discuss your previous knowledge before booking.

Guided Gross Spannort Climb

The Gross Spannort is one of the most striking peaks in the Uri Alps and is considered the emblem of the Spannort group above Engelberg. Its steep rock faces and elegant summit pyramid remind many mountaineers of the famous granite mountains of Patagonia – right in Central Switzerland.

Despite its imposing appearance, the normal route is a rewarding high-alpine tour for experienced mountaineers. The combination of glacier, easy climbing and secluded location makes the Gross Spannort a special destination for anyone wanting to experience alpine Engelberg away from the mountain railways.

Route description

The starting point is the Spannorthütte SAC above Engelberg. From the hut, the route initially leads steeply along the hiking trail into the Schlossberglücke. The sunrise here is remarkable! Continue across the Glatt Firn towards the Spannortjoch.
Depending on the conditions, glacier fields, firn passages and individual crevasse zones are crossed. Above all, the crevasses are easy to see and the glacier is often free of snow. From the col, follow the route according to the topo over 3 risers, which are overcome with easy climbing sections, to the summit structure.
The final few metres lead over stepped rock to the summit cross at the highest point of the Gross Spannort. The view down onto the Grassenfirn and the vista of the Titlis, the Spannort Group and the Uri Alps are among the most impressive panoramas in the region.
The descent is usually made via the same route with abseiling back to the Spannorthütte.

You should:

  • Staying safe when walking with crampons
  • Bring glacier experience
  • be able to tackle simple via ferrata sections up to grade III
  • be sure-footed and not prone to vertigo
  • To enjoy long alpine adventures

Hazards

Conditions on the Glatt Firn change constantly throughout the season. Crevasse zones can become clearly visible, particularly in midsummer and autumn. In the summit area, loose rocks and other rope parties occasionally cause rockfalls. Good conditions and an early start are advantageous.

The glacier changes the tour

Like many high-altitude routes around Engelberg, the route up to the Gross Spannort is constantly changing. The retreat of the Glatt Firn affects crevasse zones, access routes and the nature of the climb. Anyone who visits the Spannort regularly experiences the changes in the high-alpine landscape at first hand.

The Spannort Hut

The Spannorthütte SAC is one of the finest bases in the Engelberg region. The hut is situated impressively above the Engelberg valley and offers an ideal starting point for numerous high-alpine tours, rock climbs and traverses.
You should book your accommodation well in advance, particularly at weekends.

My tip

The Gross Spannort is particularly rewarding in early summer, when the Glatt Firn is still well covered in snow and the glacier sections can be negotiated comfortably. Those who combine the tour with an overnight stay at the Spannorthütte will experience one of the finest sunrises in Central Switzerland.

Conclusion

The Gross Spannort is one of the great classics in the Engelberg area. Its striking pyramidal summit, the impressive glacial landscape and the alpine atmosphere make it one of the most beautiful high-altitude hikes in the Uri Alps.

Questions

How long does a guided tour up the Gross Spannort take?

Most rope teams stay the night before at the Spannorthütte SAC. There we meet for dinner, discuss the tour and prepare the equipment for the next day.
Early in the morning we start towards the summit. After climbing the Gross Spannort we return to the Spannort hut. As a rule we are back at the hut around midday and then descend leisurely to Engelberg.
This leaves enough time for a safe ascent and allows the tour to be enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere.

What is the Spannortseeli?

In early summer, a small glacial lake, the so-called Spannortseeli, often forms at the Spannortjoch. Fed by the glacier's meltwater, the lake frequently glows in an impressive emerald blue and is one of the most picturesque photo opportunities around the Spannorthütte.
At the same time, the Spannortseeli is a visible sign of glacial recession in the Uri Alps. As snowmelt increases, the lake grows in size over the course of the summer until the water eventually drains away or seeps into the ground.
Depending on the season and conditions, the Spannortseeli can vary in size or even disappear completely.

Are there crevasses on the Gross Spannort?

Yes. The route goes via the Grassenfirn. Depending on the time of year, crevasses may be visible or covered by snow.

Can you climb the Gross Spannort in a day?

Yes. Very fit mountaineers can undertake the tour directly from Engelberg. However, most alpinists choose to stay overnight at the Spannorthütte and split the tour over two days.

Why is the mountain called Spannort?

The name «Spannort» likely originates from the striking rock formations and ridges of the Spannort group. The exact origin of the name has not been conclusively determined, but the mountain has been considered one of the best-known peaks around Engelberg for centuries.
