Freeride Titlis «Schlächtismatt»

The Schlächtismatt is one of the most popular freeride descents on the Titlis. Thanks to the short approach from the Stand top station, the route is quick to reach and, in good snow conditions, offers varied slopes with hollows, couloirs and numerous playful variations.

The narrow couloir is particularly well known «vagina», which runs south of the gondola route. Despite the small difference in altitude, the Schlächtismatt often provides surprisingly good powder snow and is ideal for doing multiple laps in a day.

Highlights

  • One of the fastest freeride runs on the Titlis
  • Ideal for multiple consecutive runs
  • Many playful variations
  • Well-known couloir «Vagina»
  • Often surprisingly good powder snow

Requirements

The Schlächtismatt is suitable for advanced freeriders.

You should:

  • be able to ski safely in deep snow
  • Bring experience in open terrain
  • have the complete avalanche transceiver rescue equipment with you
  • to be able to assess the current avalanche situation

Hazards

On the right-hand side of the run (as you ski down), there is a wildlife sanctuary which must be respected at all times. Furthermore, wind-driven snow and wind-blown gullies can increase the risk of avalanches. Your choice of line should always be adapted to the current conditions.

Out with a mountain guide

The Schlächtismatt is ideally suited for improving technique in deep snow or gaining first freeride experiences on Mount Titlis. As a local mountain guide, I know the best alternative routes and decide depending on the snow and avalanche situation which line offers the most skiing enjoyment.

FAQ

What is the «Vagina» couloir?

The «Vagina» is a narrow couloir south of the gondola route. It is significantly more challenging than the standard run and is only recommended when snow and avalanche conditions are safe.

Why is the Schlächtismatt so popular?

Thanks to the short approach from the lift station, the many different routes and the often very good snow quality, multiple runs can be ridden in a single day.

Is the Schlächtismatt suitable for freeride beginners?

Yes, for good skiers with some initial freeride experience, it is an ideal introduction. The terrain is straightforward and quickly accessible if needed.

Do I need to respect the wildlife protection area?

Yes. The wildlife sanctuary must not be entered by vehicles and should be respected at all times out of consideration for the wildlife.
