Widderfeldstock – Map, Topos and Route

The Widderfeldstock demands more than its short rail access suggests. Behind the Lutersee the terrain becomes steep and the line runs through rock steps. From above the landscape opens up to the Bocki-Rotisand and the summit over the Engelberger and Melchtal valleys.

From the starting point to the destination

Route description

01

Eggen – Lake Lutersee

After the railway access via Rugisbalm from Eggen through the hilly terrain towards Lutersee. The joint map of the area also shows the significantly shorter ascent to the Salistock.

02

Steep climb after Ober Frutt

Climb up behind Lake Lutersee through the steeper, rocky area to Ober Frutt. This section requires a safe trail, stable snow conditions, and good orientation.

03

Boki-Rotisand – Summit

On to the Bocki Rotisand and the Widderfeldstock. Evaluate the return journey during the ascent; the steepest section remains a key point even downhill.

The return is part of the tour

Descent and variants

The main descent follows the ascent route. The steeper variant via the Leiterli will be planned separately. With sufficient snow conditions, an extension to the forest road to Rugisbalm is possible. Crossing into the Melchtal valley is a separate undertaking.

What matters

Key points and planning

The steep area above Lake Lutersee is the crucial section. Little snow can expose rocks and obstacles; hard snow increases the risk of slipping. Leave enough reserve for the return journey.

Check the avalanche bulletin and weather forecast for the relevant elevations and aspects. Plan your timing around snow conditions, warming and lift operating hours. Existing tracks do not replace your own assessment.

Appropriate to the route and the conditions

Equipment and requirements

  • Touring skis with climbing skins and suitable ski crampons; confidence in operating your bindings.
  • An avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel for each person, plus practised companion-rescue skills.
  • An up-to-date offline map, navigation tools, first-aid kit, bivouac bag and adequate warm and weatherproof clothing.
  • Confident off-piste skiing, fitness and sufficient reserves for the entire route.
  • For hard or icy steep sections, plan to carry crampons and an ice axe; depending on the route, a helmet, harness and rope may also be needed for protection. You must be proficient in the techniques required.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tour as easy as the Salistock?

The Widderfeldstock leads above the Lutersee in significantly steeper and more challenging terrain. The shared access to the trail says little about the difference between the tours.

Is the Leiterli the normal departure point?

The Leiterli is a steeper additional variation. For the main round, the ascent is driven along the way.
