Ski touring Brisen 2404 m

The Brisen is one of the best-known ski touring peaks in Central Switzerland. Thanks to its striking shape, numerous ascent options and varied descents, it is one of the most popular touring destinations around Engelberg and the Nidwalden region.

Whether it is a leisurely pleasure tour via the Brisenhausweg, a sporty ascent via the Steinalper Jochli or the fast option with the chairlift to Haldigrat – the Brisen offers the right route for many levels of ability. Particularly impressive are the sweeping south-eastern slopes and the magnificent view over Lake Lucerne, the Engelberg valley and the Uri Alps.

Route description

The classic route starts in Niederrickenbach and leads via the Brisenhaus to the Steinalper Jochli. From there, one climbs over the wide southeast slopes to the summit.

Alternatively, the Haldigrat chairlift saves around 700 vertical metres. From the top station, the summit can be reached in about two hours. Depending on conditions, the descent is via the ascent route, the large south-eastern slopes or – for experienced ski tourers – via steeper couloir variants.

  • Fantastic views across Lake Lucerne
  • A wide range of ascent and descent routes

The tour is suitable for experienced ski mountaineers.

You should:

  • be able to ski safely in deep snow
  • Mastering switchbacks safely
  • have experience with avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe

Out with a mountain guide

The Brisen offers countless possibilities – from a leisurely, enjoyable hike to a challenging couloir descent. As a local mountain guide, I know the best routes and adapt the tour each day to suit the snow, weather and avalanche conditions.

Depending on the conditions, we choose the best route and often find slopes that haven’t been skied yet.

FAQ

Is the Brisen suitable for beginners?

The standard route is suitable for experienced ski tourers. The steep couloirs, on the other hand, are only suitable for very experienced alpinists.

Can I climb the Brisen from the Haldigrat top station?

Yes. From the chairlift top station, the Brisen is a short and very rewarding ski tour. The ascent takes about 2 hours. Depending on the snow conditions, the skis often have to be carried on the backpack in the upper third before the summit is reached on foot.

Is the Haldigrat chairlift open?

Operation is dependent on weather and snow conditions. Check directly with the Alpboden-Haldigrat chairlift or on the Haldigrat website before your trip. Be sure to bring cash, as card payment is not possible.

Is it worth stopping for a bite at the Brisenhaus?

Yes. The Brisenhaus is a lovely SAC hut in the region and ideal for a break or lunch. The sun terrace and the view make the stopover particularly worthwhile.

When are the best conditions?

The Brisen is a popular touring destination from December to April. In midwinter, powder snow slopes beckon, while in spring the peak ranks among the finest firn tours in Central Switzerland.
