From the starting point to the destination
Route description
Fürenalp – Surenental
Depart from the mountain station on the winterly-rated route to the Surenen area and cross over. The start is high up, yet more ascent and descent come together through this first descent than the sheer elevation difference to the summit would suggest.
To the Surenenpass
Turn onto the area near Stäuber and head up the pass. Reach the Surenenpass at 2292 m through open terrain. The terrain conditions and orientation are challenging in poor visibility.
Continue to Eggenmanndli
In suitable conditions, ascend from the pass to Eggenmanndli at 2448 m. The summit is an addition to the pass crossing; take into account the remaining time until returning to the valley.
The return is part of the tour
Descent and variants
Return via the Surenenpass and through the long valley over Stäfeli to Herrenrüti. Flat stretches may require pushing or short uphill ascents. Crossing to Brüsti on the Urner side is a separate, more challenging variant with a different return transport.
What matters
Key points and planning
The length is slightly underestimated. The train avoids the ascent to the valley, but the first descent and the long valley run remain part of the day. Assess the snow cover, warming conditions, and avalanche terrain along the entire valley route.
Check the avalanche bulletin and weather forecast for the relevant elevations and aspects. Plan your timing around snow conditions, warming and lift operating hours. Existing tracks do not replace your own assessment.
Appropriate to the route and the conditions
Equipment and requirements
- Touring skis with climbing skins and suitable ski crampons; confidence in operating your bindings.
- An avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel for each person, plus practised companion-rescue skills.
- An up-to-date offline map, navigation tools, first-aid kit, bivouac bag and adequate warm and weatherproof clothing.
- Confident off-piste skiing, fitness and sufficient reserves for the entire route.
Frequently asked questions
Is it necessary to climb up only 600 meters from Fürenalp?
The ascent to the Eggenmanndli via the first descent is approximately 820 meters in altitude. The difference between the mountain station and the summit is therefore not a reliable value.
Will the normal return take place via Brüsti?
The return described here leads to the Engelberg Valley. Crossing to Brüsti must be planned separately.
