Small Bannalper Rundtour – Map, Topos and Route
Two ascents, two long descents and two cable cars connect Bannalp with Isenthal. The small round tour thrives on the alternation of the valley sides. A reliable timetable is just as important as good snow conditions: the second cable car and the return to Oberrickenbach are part of the tour.

From the starting point to the destination
Route description
Bannalp – Bannalper Schoneggeli
Starting from the mountain station of the Bannalpbahn towards Urnerstafel and to the Bannalper Schoneggeli. Without additional ascent, approximately 500 meters of elevation gain are to be planned. Pay attention at the crossing at Wechten.
Over Oberalp to St. Jakob
On the Isenthaler side, head off towards Oberalp and the lower valleys leading to St. Jakob. The start and the steeper sections require good snow conditions. From St. Jakob, take the cable car to Gitschenen.
Gitschenen – Sinsgäuer Schonegg
Climb up the Sulztal valley to the Sinsgäuer Schonegg. Then, on the Nidwaldner side, head towards Sinsgäu and Oberrickenbach. Depending on the snow conditions and the operating schedule, the train can replace the lower exit from Spis.
The return is part of the tour
Descent and variants
The two runs are long and also pass through steeper or narrower sections. The stated elevation meters apply to the main round. A detour to the Chaiserstuel increases ascent and time required. Review the train schedules and the snow conditions at both valley ends together.
What matters
Key points and planning
Allow enough time for the transition to Isenthal and for the second ascent. A delayed first descent can affect the rest of the entire round. Plan for an option to turn back before the first transition.
Check the avalanche bulletin and weather forecast for the relevant elevations and aspects. Plan your timing around snow conditions, warming and lift operating hours. Existing tracks do not replace your own assessment.
Appropriate to the route and the conditions

- Touring skis with climbing skins and suitable ski crampons; confidence in operating your bindings.
- An avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel for each person, plus practised companion-rescue skills.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Chaiserstuel belong to the small group?
The summit is an addition. The approximately 850–900 ascent meters described here refer to the round trip over the two passes without summit stops.
Which tracks do I need?
The Bannalpbahn and the St. Jakob–Gitschenen cable car are provided for this direction of travel. A possible downhill run from Spis should be considered depending on operation and snow conditions.
